Best answer: It could simply be that the laptop is very old - failing capacitors etc, the wifi card may be failing etc. You may be getting interference from neighbouring wifi networks, try changing the broadcast channel of the router. Also check there are no cordless phones, baby alarms, or cordless doorbells as these can use the same 2.4Ghz frequency.
